Now deep into the season, Sorn is navigating the balance between a challenging academic schedule and a grueling basketball calendar. But it’s a small price to pay in order pursue two things he’s passionate about.
“So far it’s been really good, but I definitely have to find time to get in the gym and find time to hit the books,” he said. “There’s not much time to do anything else, but it’s my passion. It’s what I like to do, so I’m going to do it.”
With a complicated schedule, it helps to have the athletic department’s academic resources.
“Anthony (Gabriel), our academic advisor is helping me out a lot with my class choices,” Sorn said. “He’s doing a great job of helping me out to find what classes I should be taking at what time where I can do the best both on and off the court.”
Sorn is saving some of his more difficult classes for the spring and summer, giving him the opportunity to focus his attention on basketball. When asked what he plans do once he becomes an engineer, he said he appreciates the variety of practical options he will have once he graduates.
“It’s kind of a broad topic, but there are a lot of things you can do with that major,” he said. “Mainly it’s structural design for aerospace. You can do anything from designing new projects that are computer-based designs, CAD drawings, or testing aerospace structures, anything like that."
