The GymDawgs had another incredible season in 2019 // 5.8.19

2019 was another impressive year for the Washington GymDawgs. Combined, the team earned 29 individual event titles and set 28 new individual career highs. The GymDawgs broke a score of 49.000 on events 31 times, including twice going over a score of 49.000 on all four events in a single meet.

For the ninth consecutive year, the GymDawgs earned at least one All-Pac-12 award, with Evanni Roberson earning Second Team All-Around honors. Roberson, who had been named Second Team Beam in 2018, becomes the second GymDawg in Elise Ray-Statz's three years as head coach to earn multiple All-Pac-12 awards in their career.

In the classroom, Washington was as impressive as always, earning seven Pac-12 All-Academic awards, including three Second Team selections. Monica Riley earned her third All-Academic honor in three years of eligibility for that award, while Evanni Roberson and Michaela Nelson earned their first Second Team awards. Madison Copiak, Kristyn Hoffa, Malory Rose, and Maya Washington all earned Honorable Mention as the GymDawgs finished another year with one of the highest team GPAs of any sport at Washington.

VAULT

Washington finished 2019 ranked in the country's top 25 on vault. Seven times this season a GymDawg earned the event title on vault, with Madison Copiak (three) and Geneva Thompson (four) racking up event titles.

Thompson, who recorded a score of 9.800 or higher on vault every single meet this season, had the team's highest score, earning a career-high 9.900 at Boise State. Evanni Roberson matched that mark with a career high of her own at that very same meet, earning a score of 9.900.

BARS

After finishing 2018 ranked 16th in the country on bars, the GymDawgs improved even more this year, finishing the season at 13th in the country, their highest ranking on any individual event.

That ranking was helped along by an astounding 49.575 score on bars 49.575 on bars at UC Davis, which was the highest bars score by the GymDawgs since 2004.

Three different GymDawgs earned event titles on bars this year, led by Madison Copiak's three. Copiak had the highest score on any event by this year, earning a score of 9.975 that was the highest by any GymDawg since 2007 and the highest score on bars since 2004.

Evanni Roberson and Maya Washington each earned event titles on bars as well. Twice this year Roberson earned scores of 9.900 on bars, one of five different GymDawgs to reach that mark. Copiak did so six times, while Washington, Geneva Thompson, and Monica Riley all earned scores of 9.900 once.

BEAM

Washington steadily improved on beam throughout the season, finishing the year ranked 18th. The Beam Dawgs were led by the outstanding trio of Madison Copiak, Evanni Roberson, and Malory Rose, who combined for seven event titles between them.

Copiak, Roberson, and Rose all earned scores of 9.900 or higher twice each. Roberson had a score of 9.950 at Arizona, the highest score on beam by a GymDawg since 2004.

In all, eight different GymDawgs would compete on beam in 2019. That included the collegiate debuts of Brenna Brooks and Meaghan Ruttan, two of Washington's six stellar newcomers. Michaela Nelson was a consistent presence on beam for Washington, while Maya Washington provided a number of excellence routines as well.

FLOOR

It was another year of beauty on floor for Washington, which earned five individual event titles thanks to Kristyn Hoffa (two), Evanni Roberson (two), and Maya Washington (one). Washington put up team scores of 49.000 or higher on floor in all but the first two weeks of the season.

The GymDawgs peaked late in the season on floor, with Hoffa earning three scores of 9.900 or higher in the final five weeks. That included two career-best scores of 9.925 in back-to-back competitions. Maya Washington reached the 9.900 mark three times, topping out at a career-best 9.950.

Geneva Thompson and Amara Cunningham also set career highs on floor, with each earning scores of 9.900 this season. Michaela Nelson, Brenna Brooks, and Monica Riley rounded out the floor rotation for the GymDawgs, contributing with beautiful routines through the season.
