I began my international career with the United States U-20 National team. I was fortunate to get called up for two friendlies in Austria then sadly did not make the world cup team later that year. However, this made me eager and motivated to get back into the mix. A couple years later I get called into my first ever US Mens National Team camp and it so happened to be the Gold Cup in 2017. It was my first real taste at an official tournament and it gave me hope that I could one day be a mainstay on the team. It was such a great experience, we ended up beating Jamaica in the final. Two years later I found myself at my second Gold Cup at the age of 24. I hope to be part of many more.
I found out I made the final roster for the Gold Cup when the coordinator sent out an email a week prior to the announcement. It is always such an honor to get your named called, it means the world to represent the country that has given my family so much. I immediately called my parents and gave them the good news so that they could plan their trips to watch the games.
My favorite memory during the Gold Cup was playing in the final. Family and friends were able to attend and it was such an incredible experience. Although we came up short I felt that we made some big leaps as a team. We implemented a style of play and created a culture between the players and staff that ultimately will help us move forward as a nation. The next step is to continue on this path.
My experience with the national team has made me a better player and person. We play in a very structured and well balanced system that is based off spacing and counter movements to the opponent and even our own teammates. My positioning as well as my ability to play in the pocket has improved. All of this does not happen over night, the amount of time spent watching film as a team and in small groups increases our chances of getting better individually and collectively. I hope to have many more chances to improve with the national team.
The University of Washington shaped me as an individual, the environment I was in required me to mature both on and off the field. I found ways to learn information and apply it to life or the field. I learned that being a good teammate or friend can go so far, knowing that you hold yourself accountable for more than just yourself. I can not stress how important the University of Washington was for my career, I certainly wouldn't be where I am at without the institution and the everlasting friendships that came with it.
