On meet day, Wilson and Mason take very different approaches.
Wilson’s way of hyping himself up is “kind of unconventional,” he admits. “I like to yell at myself, hit myself a little bit, get myself a little mad. I don’t know if most guys would do that but I just think that’s the best way to throw far, put some thoughts into my head that make me a little mad. It’s worked this far so I’m just going to keep with it.”
Mason will feed that fire for Wilson when he is a spectator, saying, “I know that my teammates like for me to scream at them, so I do that when they need it.”
But when it’s his turn in the circle, he likes to think about nothing … literally.
“I’m not thinking about anything, and if I am thinking about anything it’s just thinking about not thinking about anything. I’m really calm and my killer mindset comes moreso in practice than in a meet. I don’t go into a meet and do anything that I haven’t done in practice, so practice is really important.”
The two will now get to test themselves against the best of a deep and talented Pac-12 Conference this weekend in Tucson, as they look to firmly establish themselves as power players in the Pac-12, then they’ll move on to seek their first NCAA Championship bids. If they reach Austin, they would be the first Husky men to make Nationals in the discus since 2006 and in the shot put since 2000.
“I’m excited for the postseason,” Wilson says. “The most important part is just staying healthy, eating good, getting a good night’s sleep, keeping up with school. Can’t get too wound up about it, but I’m looking forward to competing with some of the best guys in the country.”
Adds Mason, “Just going to do what I’ve been doing and take every meet one at a time and not think too much about it. Just trust that I can go throw a nice easy 56 (meters) and after that I can kick it up a notch. But get the consistency part down really well, that’s the most important part to me.”
With continued hard work and health, the two Dawgs could potentially go from “best since” to “best ever” at Washington.
