Washington Celebrates a Decorated Senior Class at Alaska Airlines Arena

WASHINGTON VOLLEYBALL SENIORS

Washington Volleyball celebrates a talented, hardworking and successful class. Head coach Keegan Cook reflects on what these seven student-athletes have done for Washington.

The group has a 2014-17 record of 114 wins and 18 losses, an .864 winning percentage and in Alaska Airlines Arena, the senior class has gone 57-7 (.890).

On their giving:

I think when a class of players commit themselves to the level that this group has, there comes this point where articulating their impact becomes almost impossible. Anything I’ve thought of this week simply doesn’t encompass what this group has given to their University. They guided this program through a huge coaching transition, and they created our beach program as dual sport athletes.

On their competitiveness:

They are four wins shy of being the winningest class in Washington history. Winningest ever. I don’t think many people are aware of that. Three of them were here as redshirts in 2013, which means they have been part of three Pac-12 Championships. The others have won two and gone to two Elite Eights and a Sweet Sixteen.

On their resilience :

These kids have some miles on them. I joke around and tell them to run like athletes. I remember when they used to bounce off the walls and I couldn’t get them to stop moving. They’re a bit more measured now to say the least. They take their time warming up. They don’t skip training room appointments. They’re more than a little mindful with their jumps and swings. Unfortunately, I’ve been to the hospital with most of all of them...multiple times. They have taught me a different kind of strength. Their resilience is a major theme of their careers. They have always persevered.

On their commitment:

I think the ultimate compliment I can give this group is that their commitment to this program has never been conditional. Each of them has had a stretch of time where they weren’t in a starting position and all of them continued to give themselves to their team during those stretches. On the flip side, each and every one of them has played and contributed in big matches this season.

On their legacy:

I’ve overheard them talking about this, sometimes I wish they wouldn’t worry so much about it. The people they have become in their time here is more than enough. They’ve given this program and this University some tremendous memories.

CARLY DEHOOG

Leading the Huskies in 2017 with 319 kills. She had 171 career kills entering this season.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

The atmosphere in Alaska Airlines Arena on gameday is the best in the Pac-12. Our fans are so loyal and the Dawg Pack fires us up during games. Playing in Alaska Airlines Arena has been a joy these past 4 years and I am looking forward to soaking it all up my final season.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

My coaching staff has helped me grow so much off the court about how to be a better teammate, friend, and daughter. They’ve taught me how special it is to be a part of something bigger than myself.

Can you talk about some of the experiences that have been opened to you through the sport and how they have changed your life?

Most importantly, volleyball gas introduced me to my best friends and people who will be life-long mentors. The people I’ve met at UW have made me a better person and given me some of my deepest relationships.

I ask so much of Carly that at times she feels more like an assistant coach than a student athlete. I think that says a lot about how responsible and consistent she is in all parts of her life. This year she’s shown all of us the power of being consistent and perseverant. Her injury her redshirt sophomore year kept her off the court for nearly a year. In that time she never stopped learning, and she never stopped allowing me to coach her to the highest standards. - Coach Keegan Cook

JADE FINAU

Has 543 career assists and 172 career digs while playing in 153 career sets.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

To be a better version of myself in all conditions, our experiences here will help shape us to be better moms, spouses, coworkers, bosses etc in the future.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

It’s breathtaking! Seeing so many people come out to games dressed in purple and gold is indescribable.

Who is your biggest inspiration(s) in why you play volleyball? Please Explain.

My mom surprised me, taking me on a trip to Sacramento for the NCAA National Championship (Stanford vs. Penn State) she told me “If you wanna play this sport, go learn and watch the best” Ever since that, it motivated me to go far in volleyball and play in college.

Growth, service, and respect are the three words that come to mind with Jade. I have tremendous respect for the student-athlete and young woman she has grown to become. You can always find her with her two families, the one at home, or the one here at UW. Service has always been a core value of Jade’s, service to her teammates, and to the larger communities she is a part of. She has come a long way since the summer of 2013 and in her fifth season has grown into a disciplined and passionate competitor. - Coach Keegan Cook

Put down 130 kills so far this season and ranks among the Pac-12 leaders with 1.39 blocks per set.

What are some of your earliest memories of playing volleyball?

I was seven when I learned how to overhand serve over the net. It wasn’t good form, but I learned inside the high school gym where I grew up watching my three older sisters. The coach who would years later be my coach was watching and got really excited. I was in love with the game ever since.

Who is your biggest inspiration(s) in why you play volleyball? Please Explain.

My older sisters, Aly, Maddy, and Audrey. Growing up Aly was there for every big decision because she was the oldest and was extremely passionate about volleyball. She’s the reason I’m number 11 now.

What do you love most about playing volleyball?

I love the team aspect most. There is nothing like the bond you form with your team who become your sisters. You go through everything together, happy, sad, personal bests and worsts, etc.

She shares so much in common with this group that it feels like she’s been with us for years. I’ve never seen such a seamless transfer in terms of team chemistry. She has the same resilience and the same work ethic as the rest of the group. She could have gone to almost any program in the country, she chose us and we couldn’t be more thankful. I wish we had the opportunity to coach her for all four years. - Coach Keegan Cook

CRISSY JONES

Has 900 career kills, 51 aces, 469 digs, and 370 blocks for 1,143 career points, 12th-most in the rally scoring era.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

Playing in Alaska Airlines Arena is really exciting. It’s an amazing feeling to make big plays in front of our big crowd.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

The coaching staff has taught me to strive for success in all areas of my life, not just volleyball.

What do you love most about playing volleyball?

I love volleyball because of how team oriented it is. I love being able to celebrate with my team when we make plays.

I think I’ve asked Crissy to have just about every role possible on this team over the course of her career. I will always remember the enthusiasm, the willingness to be coached, and the sincere effort to do what the team needs at any moment. She finds the joy in the game wherever it can be found, and she plays hard in all conditions. I talk to the team often about being willing instead of trying to be ready. Third in UW history with 456 sets played, six away from school record. Fifth in UW history with 1,296 digs. Sixth in UW history in aces with 139. Sixth in the rally scoring era at UW with 1,294 points scored.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

The roar of the crowd is unbeatable and it keeps us hyped the whole game. Our fans are so loyal. We also have the best floor in the country.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

To be very organized so I am able to get everything done before we have volleyball so I can focus all of my energy on my sport during practice.

Can you talk about some of the experiences you have been opened up to you through the sport and how they have changed your life?

I have gotten the chance to travel to so many different places and get connected with so many amazing people and volleyball made that possible for me.

I think she’s a player we all won’t fully be able to appreciate until about ten years from now when we realize that we can’t find another one like her. Passionate, genuine, unselfish, courageous, positive, competitive, go ahead and take your pick. I used to worry about what she was going to do after she graduated, and a few years later I find myself worrying about what I’m going to do after she graduates. - Coach Keegan Cook

COURTNEY SCHWAN

Career-highs in aces, digs and blocks as a senior. Ranks No. 15 in career kills with 1,083. Also has 934 career digs and 81 career aces.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

To be patient and really value my relationships with people.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

The energy in this arena is indescribable. The fans are amazing and we really have a home court advantage. Opponents do not like playing here, and for good reason; it’s intimidating and most definitely a huge arena almost always completely filled with incredible fans full of energy.

Can you talk about some of the experiences you have been opened up to you through the sport and how they have changed your life?

Travel. I have been to places I never though I’d go because of volleyball. With travel you learn culture and how to be more grateful for what you have. (China, Guatemala, Europe, Mexico)

She’s carried a heavy responsibility on the court for years. There is literally no phase of the game where she has not been central to our success. Her ability to perform at a consistent and high level has given others the time and space to grow themselves. The consistency in performance is a gift to her teammates. Personally, Courtney challenged me like no player before to become a better coach in order to help her grow into the player we all now know. - Coach Keegan Cook

BAILEY TANNER

Fourth in school history with 3,364 career assists and has added 200 career kills, 83 aces, 783 digs, and 152 blocks.

What do you love most about playing volleyball?

I love getting fired up for my teammates when they make a great play or have a breakthrough on the court.

Can you talk about some of the experiences that have been opened to you through the sport and how they have changed your life?

Traveling all over has been unreal. I’ve gotten to experience so many different cultures, people, and places thanks to this program.

What is something the coaching staff has taught you off the court?

The coaches have taught us how to be better people and not just volleyball players. They care about us and our future success and happiness, rather than just success on the court here.

What does it feel like to play at Alaska Airlines Arena?

The atmosphere is unreal. All the fans and support make it the best environment in the Pac-12, and there’s nowhere else I’d rather be.

She’s always been our character with character. You don’t forget Bailey Tanner. The best thing I can say about her is that I don’t know if anyone loves this game more than Bailey. I think love of the game is ultimately measured in what you sacrifice to compete with and for your team. She’s a medical miracle in my eyes who embraces her team, her program and the opportunity to compete each and every day. - Coach Keegan Cook
