Washington's offense brings back a few potent options, with freshman help in the wings sure to boost the scoring threat. Pascale Dumesnil, Sianna Siemonsma, Mireya Grey, and Asia Brisco return from last year, with Kennedy Smith and Isabella Castro back in the mix after making full recoveries from injuries that kept them out in 2017. A freshman group of Makena Carr, Ruby Hellstrom, and MaKayla Woods will join the forward mix.
Dumesnil was another of Washington’s top scorers last year, leading the team with three assists as well as putting away one goal. As a junior, Dumesnil’s scoring came in devastating bunches as she put up a two-assists game as well as a goal and an assist later in the year against Utah. She enters this season as Washington’s top active scorer, having put up 13 points over her three years. Dumesnil will look to continue to step up in the biggest games: three of her four career goals have come against ranked teams.
Siemonsma was one of four Huskies to score multiple goals last year, potting three in her 20 appearances. The Californian’s three goals were the most by a Husky freshman since 2015. Only four freshman in the last decade have scored more goals than Siemonsma. Against Boise State, Siemonsma scored one of Washington’s three braces last season en route to earning the Nike Portland Invitational Offensive MVP award.
A veteran of the Jamaican Junior National Team, Grey made ten appearances off the bench for the Huskies during her freshman year. In the 2-1 win over Illinois, she played a season-high 54 minutes, putting one of her two shots on goal. She would also play over 20 minutes against SMU, New Mexico, and Cal.
Back after missing the 2017 season, Smith will look to jump right back into her scoring ways. In her last appearance as a freshman in 2016, Smith scored her first career goal, coming against Arizona State just a few minutes after coming on the pitch. She also played 24 minutes against Stanford that season.
Brisco's sophomore season saw her make 11 appearances, making it 25 games in two years for the Renton, Washington native. Brisco, who scored a goal as a freshman, played over 20 minutes four times, including in three straight wins over #2 Florida, New Mexico, and Boise State.
Fully recovered from injury, Castro will see her first action since a highly successful freshman year in 2016. That season, she scored her first career goal, firing in a long shot against Southern Utah to add to the Huskies' lead. She managed a shot in her very first collegiate appearance as well, playing 14 minutes in the 1-0 win over Tennessee. Castro has made one start, playing 87 minutes against Stanford in 2016.
Carr comes to Washington after winning a state championship and Seattle Times Player of the Year in 2017. The state MVP that year, Carr took home a state club championship in 2017 as well.
Union High School's all-time goals record-holder, Woods was a two-time All-League First Team honoree during her high school career. After setting the Union single-season goal record as a senior, Woods also earned All-State Second Team honors. She has been a part of U.S. Youth Soccer's ODP National Camp.
As a freshman at La Costa Canyon High School, Hellstorm broke the single-season record for goals scored. Since then, she has only improved, leading La Costa Canyon to two CIF and state championships in California. Hellstrom also won the ECNL U18 national championship and, while playing with the San Diego Surf Soccer Club, won the 2016 Surf Cup.
