SAN FRANCISCO - It took no time at all for Siena Ruelas to cement herself as a wall in front of the net. After making seven saves in her first career start, Ruelas has been named the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week.
"Winning the Pac-12 Goalkeeper of the Week is a true honor for me," said Ruelas. "The opportunity to play in one of the best collegiate leagues in the nation and represent an institution like UW is a great privilege. This honor is not for myself but for my teammates, coaches, and loved ones.
"As we begin preseason in preperation for Pac-12 play, I'm excited to compete along with my teammates and I look forward to striving toward our team goals this year. I hope we can leave an unforgettable legacy for the Husky program."
Ruelas is the sixth Husky goalkeeper ever to win a Pac-12 Player of the Week award and first since Sarah Shimer took home the honor last year. Ruelas joins Shimer, Megan Kufeld, Jordi LaFontaine-Kussmann, Kelsey Rasmussen, and Hope Solo as the only Husky goalkeepers to earn that award.
The California native's seven saves against #7 Florida were the most in a game by any Husky making their first appearance since Hope Solo also made seven saves in 1999.
